Mission: Seattle Arts & Lectures champions the literary arts by engaging and inspiring readers and writers of all generations in the Pacific Northwest.

Founded in 1988, Seattle Arts & Lectures (SAL) works throughout the Pacific Northwest to engage readers and support writers, as well as inspire the next generation.  They broaden community engagement in the arts by providing extensive and diverse access to arts and culture. SAL promotes community participation and engagement in a variety of ways including: offering audience education programs, arts education for students, professional development opportunities for teachers, and free tickets for students and teachers.

Through both school and public programs, SAL directly serves more than 17,000 children and adults annually. With five programs meant to foster imagination, diverse ideas and a love of reading and writing, SAL has a wide-ranging constituency of Puget Sound readers, practicing writers, and the students who will form the future. Their events raise awareness of the dynamic role the literary arts play in creating and presenting ideas in our culture.

Seattle Arts & Lectures’ Programs include:

Literary Arts Series– features the world’s finest contemporary writers and cultural thinkers.

SAL Presents– unique special events held at diverse venues.

Poetry Series- readings and talks by renowned poets.

SAL U – a literary arts education program offering lifetime learners timely and topical courses taught by University of Washington faculty.

Writers in the Schools (WITS)– dedicated to inspiring and improving reading and writing in public elementary, middle, and high schools and hospitals through in-school, yearlong residencies with local professional writers. In the 2013-14 school year, WITS will serve 5,447 K-12 students at 24 sites (plus an additional estimated 2,000 indirectly through program components).
